I was in Portland for Jerry's Radical Relating workshop. Our homework on Saturday night was to get a stranger to invite you into their home for dinner. Now, I've heard of this exercise and always thought...shit...I hope I'm never asked to do that.
Soooooo. I asked Peggy, who went through the Illusion Conclusion Course with me, to do it together. She's an 8 and can out 8 me.
We went into a neighborhood in Portland with homes, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Seemed like a very "chic" area. But what the heck, let's do it.
Peggy had to meet her daughter before we started, so she dropped me off by a coffee shop to see what I could drum up. Having done all the sales for the past few years, I hit the ground running. Talked to about 12 people in the space of 15 minutes. Can you believe the number of people who don't cook at home anymore? Sheesh, usually young, probably not married. Most were open to talking to me (and I didn't even have time to create a spiel).
After I talked to 90% of the folks in the coffee shop, I was sitting outside when Peggy came back and I reported my results. We started walking down the street and saw a small health food grocery co-op. We figured people would be buying food for dinner. We talked to another 6 - 8 folks and struck out again.
I thought, maybe we need to be in a neighborhood where people are cooking dinner. It was getting on to 6:30 and we had the story that our window of opportunity was closing. We saw a guy in laundrymatt. He said he was in the middle of moving but that people were friendly around here, so keep it up.
We walked down the street and tried a house with a light on. Two teenage boys came up on their skateboards and said they lived their. We told them what was up and they wanted to know if their mother knew. I asked if their mother was home...oops, wrong question. Hey kid, wanta buy some dope?
So we started walking and were contemplating giving up. Then I walked by a driveway and there was a young guy lighting a barbecue. Bingo, someone who was cooking. I walked up to him and told him what was up. Said we'd go buy a bottle of wine and dessert. He said, he and his girlfriend were going to have a simple dinner but if we want, sure come on back.
Yippee.... So walking about a foot off the ground we went back to a bakery picked up dessert and a bottle of wine. Came back and meet Nick and Amy.
Turns out Nick is a chef in between jobs and was going to start working at a high end restaurant opening in Portland. Amy is a second year law student and wants to go into estate planning. Peggy is a new financial planner so they could set up some networking possibilities.
Nick will be a new Sous Chef and finally have people under him. His dream is to open his own restaurant.
He made a roast pork tenderloin with mustard rub, roasted new potatoes on a chopped leek and shallot simmered sauce. Great presentation!!
After we left, we both felt very much alive. What an evening.

B's knees sales results 4/11/08
Hola...salesites!! Went for a sale, yesterday, weather was wonderful. I've just been feeling this anger all week. So was not sure about makin' zee jump. But what the heck...let's see what comes up.
Went out for an hour and a half to two hours. Don't know how long exactly since I went to do some chores in the middle.
Got some great responses. More of the usual god responses...I've taken to holding the book upside down so they can't read it..."What's it about?" Some of the responses...I talk to god all the time...is he Jewish, I won't read it if he's not...I don't buy books that are not on recycled paper...what a hoot.
Had a nice talk with an Indian lady who works with a guru and felt she had enough spiritual practice. Very nice lady. I asked her where she was from and she said...San Jose...well actually...India. I said, "I didn't know there was a San Jose, India."
There was a social worker convention in town and plenty of people to talk to.
Anyway...lightened up after a while and had some fun.

Guidance Requested
I have "upgraded" my presentations and so far this week I am 14/0/0. I have been selling "How to Win by Quitting."
I am using a spiel
I am out selling How to Win By Quitting today (and I show them the book). Would you be interested in learning more?
I am batting 100% on getting a "No" response. Is my sample rate too small or do I need to change the start of my spiel?
Your thoughts and stories would be appreciated.

hello from tnj april 7
How fun that I bought books from Wayne and didn't go out with my beloved Intro. to Spiritual Harmony today! My story is all about this and that, a new home, a glee for job searching, bring it on, and being in my belly, so easy to be there when I can stay in....(thanks Jennifer Budney)....
...I will go out on Thursday for an hour. Anyone coming along?
I miss you Barry and Harman. Where are you?

H's Results for the Week of 4/4
My results selling books (Spiritual Harmony and Dynamic Teaching) and cards (Revelation and Wild Time) has been:
People spoken to: 28
Presentations: 23
Sales: 0
I am in the process of adding a spiel to see how that works for me. Up until now, I have been walking up to people and asking for the sale without much of a story. I am also shifting my perspective so that paying $5 or $10 for a license to have a wild time or revelation is perfectly reasonable.

B's Check-in...Phone call with Jackie
I had a phone call tonight with Jackie, the creator of the sales game. She definitely showed me some new angles. She suggested that I come up with a spiel that was me, that explained my relationship with Jerry and his work. What is in it for me...what is my motivation? Share my experience, my energy, my laughter. Make if fun.
So I'm working on MY new spiel...
"My friend Jerry Stocking lives in Northern Georgia. He has written books and leads workshops, helping people see that life is play, that everyone wants to play but we don't see it. As a matter of fact the one thing that I like about Jerry is that he only does what he wants. If he wants to sleep in, he does. If he wants to play for a day. He just plays.
His workshops are confrontational, like coming out and talking to strangers like yourself. But when I'm in the workshops and I can step back and see that life actually can be fun, I begin to laugh at myself and how serious I take life.
So one of the things I do is to go out and talk to strangers and show them one of the books he wrote...Laughing with Dog!! I have to step out of myself and take some risk to just walk up to strangers but I've met lots of wonderful people and after I do it, I feel different like I've opened up and shared myself with the people I meet. They seem to open up a little to.
That's what his books do for me and they can do it for you. This book Laughing with God sells for $10 and I request that you by it now."

tnj checks in: First of April
Selling on Monday was just what I needed. ...Of course. The 'stress' of a 4 pm sales time allows me to put attention on now so that later is taken care of. My story remains: I want to sell and hm, maybe not. And when I am selling, out with people, looking for them, being amongst myself and others, what a game, what a riot, what a world to find out what happens and what role I play.
Will we know? Will I know? Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no.
During the hour that we were out, me Harman and Barry, I made 9 approaches and five presentations and 0 sales. Both men and women I spoke to were polite; no one had a story they didn't believed, even me ;-) I'm amazed every time when people say Yes. Sure. Okay. That would be fine. Yes. Sure. Yes. ... They open, and I open.
No sales, and Yes, the game plays on...
...
